How does this sketch become a large piñata stuffed full of tiny zines? This mystery will gradually be revealed over the week, until next Sunday you have the chance to meet and defeat the monster yourself!
Vanessa here, with a note on what I’ve been working on for the zine pinata, a tiny A8 zine to go in the belly of the beast (whatever the beast might end up being – we are yet to construct it). I usually favour A5 zines, so shrinking things down small is a challenge for me. The great thing about it, though, is that you come out with a zine that only takes up one piece of paper – in fact I can make 2 zines from one piece of A4 paper, which is very satisfying for someone who usually condemns herself to spending hours photocopying 40 page behemoths…
Here the typewriter’s out, the papers are stacking up, the tea’s being drunk. But for the final result, you will have to come and have a bash at the zinata as that’s where copies of this zine will be.
Anyone else who is sending us little zines for the zinata, make sure you do so now! The same goes for our Absent Zinesters – and there’s more info below for both of these if you need to refresh your memories on what to do. The main thing to remember is, get it to us this week.
We’ll be back soon with some in progress shots of this crazy zinata…
As well as sending us zines for the Ziñata (see previous post) you can also participate in the Absent Zinesters table if you’re unable to make it to the fair. Here is some information on how it will work!
Send us copies of your zine and we will sell them for you on the day. We won’t charge commission for zines sold on the Absent Zinesters table. After the fair we will pay you for your sold zines (via paypal or bank transfer).
If there are copies of your zine left over after the fair you can:
a) leave them with us to sell though Take Care Distro (which is run by Emma and Tim), in which case they will sell your zines on consignment. More details about that can be found at takecarezines.org
b) we can return unsold zines to you, if you pay for the postage. If you’d prefer this we’ll get back to you after the fair to sort out the details
Send 5-10 copies of your zine to:
Take Care Distro
PO Box 4
Enmore NSW 2042
They need to arrive before the 4th of September, so the last week of August is your approximate postage deadline.
Please include a note with your zines stating clearly:
* your name and/or zine making pseudonym
* the name of your zine/s and how many you’re sending us
* the retail price of your zine/s
* your paypal email (or bank details)
* your contact details
* what you want us to do with unsold copies of your zine/s (i.e. sell through Take Care or return to you)
Also, whether you’re sending zines or not, feel free to send flyers for your zine or for zine-related activities in your town!
Be part of zine history and make a zine for the Snapdragon Zine Fair’s Zine piñata or Ziñata.
The fair’s being held at in Sydney on September 4th, but if you can’t come along, you can still be involved. We’re doing a callout for zines for the ziñata – please contribute!
What you need to do is make a small zine – by small we are thinking A8, or approximately 7 x 5cm. It can be about anything that you like, and have as many pages as you like, just keep it small so it’s easy to fit in the ziñata and easy for you to post.
Once you’ve made your zine, send us 10 copies to PO Box 4 Enmore NSW 2042 Australia. Please send them to us by August 26th.
To say thank you we’ll send you a zine or two from other ziñata participants, and a special badge for contributors only! So start thinking small… and please spread the word to other zinesters!
Join us for the Snapdragon Zine Fair on Sunday 4th September. From 11am-4pm the Red Rattler will be a place to celebrate all things zine: to meet other zine makers, trade, buy and read zines, and participate in the world’s first zine pinata!
Would you like to be involved? There are a number of ways to do this:
1. Have a table at the zine fair.
If you’d like to apply for a stall, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org with the following details:
Your contact details.
A brief description of your zine/s.
An image of your zine/s.
We have limited tables available so want to make the best use of space possible. Each stall space is ½ a table. We’ll be hiring the tables so ask that each stall contributes $5 to cover the cost of this (we’ll collect this on the day).
Please contact us by June 30th if you’d like a stall.
We will try to accommodate as many zinemakers as possible, but if you don’t get a stall, or can’t make it due to being thousands of kilometres away or just don’t want to sit behind a table all day, you can:
2. Send zines for the Absent Zinesters table.
This table is for people who can’t make it but still want to sell their zines at the fair. If you’re interested in sending zines for this please email email@example.com with the same details as above.
At the moment we’re seeing how much interest there is in this so we’ll get back to you with the fine details later. The basic idea is that you’ll send us copies of your zines and we’ll sell them for you on the day.
3. Contribute to the world’s first ever zine piñata! Join the ziñata! We’ll be busting open a papier-mâché treasure chest of tiny zines!
Want to be involved? Make a zine! Zines can be about anything but must be A8 in size. Please register your interest by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org and we’ll put you on the list.
You will need to send 1 – 10 copies of your zine to us by 26th August.
